Virtual Beginning Watercolor Workshop with Jeff Williams

Join us as we transform the beauty and delicacy of watercolor into original and inspiring artworks! This two-day workshop, taught by experienced instructor Jeff Williams, will help you develop basic drawing and watercolor skills as you explore exercises and develop paintings online together. At the conclusion of the class you will have several small paintings as well as the materials and understanding to continue exploring this intriguing medium on your own!

In order to keep both students and staff safe as we slowly reopen the center, we have decided to offer this watercolor class virtually. With the aim of providing a sense of community and shared space similar to our traditional courses, the course will take place in a synchronous learning environment. In other words, a live, real-time classroom with other students and an instructor on Zoom. Students will meet from 9:00-11:00 each morning for instruction and discussion. From 11:00-2:00, the instructor will remain available on the Zoom platform while students are free to take a break, eat some lunch, and work on their project. Students will be able to check in with the instructor at any time during this break for guidance, company, or conversation. From 2:00-4:00 pm the class will once again meet together, this time sharing their work, discussing the experience and exploring the medium further. Saturday afternoon will be focused on developing a complete landscape painting. A supply list will be provided ahead of time. In order to keep it simple and affordable, we will be working with a limited palette and keeping the paintings relatively small.

Instructor’s name:
Jeff Williams
Initially drawn to watercolor via architecture, Williams finds the unpredictable and beautiful dispersion of color in water fascinating and the challenge to represent his observations with this medium invigorating. His hope is that by doing so he may help others find beauty in the world around us.

After 31 years Williams retired from teaching to pursue two of his passions, watercolor painting and travel. Inspired and encouraged by workshop leaders Tony Van Hasselt, Thomas Schaller and most notably, Joseph Zbukvic, Williams is currently creating paintings both in studio and “en plein air.” He has rapidly become a regular on the professional “plein air circuit,” having been juried into 12 events in 2019, traveling over 21,500 miles and winning numerous awards. His plein air paintings have been juried into numerous regional and national exhibitions, again receiving various awards. 2020 has seen him juried into all plein air events entered before the pandemic hit, including Easton Plein Air, the largest and most prestigious plein air event available; his watercolor “Rockin’ Bass Rocks” was recognized as the outstanding watercolor in the international Boldbrush Competition in January.
