February 24, 2018, 10:00am - 4:30 pm. Techniques of natural dyeing will be taught using traditional methods. Students will learn the difference between a dye and a stain and the properties of each. Dyes dating back over 500 years, learning their history and importance to ancient cultures and Native Americans will be learned. Each student will create a dye notebook to take with them. Dyes used will include, but are not limited to, indigo, madder, osage orange, black walnut, cochineal, logwood, onion skins, and turmeric. We will be dyeing 100% wool yarn samples. Participants are encouraged to bring small samples of their own art medium (cotton, reed, other types of animal fibers) to drop into dye pots. Students may bring milk jugs or jars if they desire to take home remaining exhaust baths.

The workshop fee includes the use of materials during workshops shuch as: dye pans, natural dyes used in class, wool yarn, one three-ring binder/student, photo-copied dye recipe pages, dye gloves, hot plates, misc. dye equipment (wooden spoons, timers, towels, Chlorox Clean-up, etc.).
