Beginning Jewelry Series with artist and OSU professor, Chris Ramsay

This is an exciting opportunity to take up to four individual jewelry making courses that are designed to technically complement one another but are also stand-alone classes so that you can pick and choose the classes that best fit your interests and summer schedule.

 

image15Class No. 1: Texture Pendant or Earrings
Learn to use a jewelers saw to cut detailed shapes from a metal sheet and create texture using a rolling mill and hammer. The enriched surfaces and will make your hand-crafted jewelry unique and genuinely one-of-a-kind.

image14Class No. 2: Spinner Ring
Learn to silver solder textured sterling silver wire into kinetic rings that revolve around a larger interior band that perfectly fits your finger.

image13Class No. 3: Create your own Cabochon   (optional one-on-one class)
Work with a trained lapidary specialist to cut and shape rough stone into a cabochon shape (a polished stone with a flat bottom and rounded top) that is ready to be set in jewelry.

image12Class No. 4: Silver Ring with a Box Bezel Stone Setting
Learn to create a box bezel setting for a cabochon stone (provided if you have not cut your own stone) and silver solder it onto a sterling silver ring.

Instructor
Chris Ramsay is a Professor in the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History at OSU, specializing in metals and jewelry design. Ramsay was named Outstanding Higher Educator of the Year in 2013 by the Oklahoma Art Education Association and was awarded an OSU Regents Distinguished Teaching Award in 2015, and the Oklahoma Governor’s Art Award in 2019. He is an active supporter of art in the public schools in Stillwater. Locally you may have seen his artwork on display at the OSU Art Museum in a one-person exhibition titled Meditations in Stillwater or on permanent display at the Philbrook Museum of Art.

All Supplies Included
Students need to wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get messy. Students are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle with the student’s name on it.
