The Faraway and Up Close: Mixed Media Works Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe

Another of our week long summer camps this year was inspired by the artwork and ethos of the much beloved Georgia O'Keeffe. The following mixed media project was developed in order to explore more deeply the influence that photography had on O'Keeffe's work. From the beginning, O'Keeffe was moved to paint vast open landscapes of land and sky, a place that she called lovingly "the faraway." But it was from the rise of art photography and those artists working in the new medium, including her husband Alfred Stieglitz, that O'Keeffe learned the value of zooming in. Some of her most iconic works are the result of these up close studies. In this lesson, students take their cues from O'Keeffe and create their own vision of the faraway, while also practicing seeing what is up close. This project was designed for our 6-10 year old cohort but could be adapted for any age group.

Betye Saar Inspired Palm Collagraph and Assemblage

This project was hands down (pun intended) the students' favorite from our week long summer art camp inspired by the artwork of contemporary artist, Betye Saar. It is accessible for most students age 6 on up through high school. Saar, born in 1926 and still working today, is considered the grande dame of assemblage art. She also works in collage, printmaking, and watercolor. Her works address a wide variety of themes including spirituality, mysticism, time, personal history, ancestry, race, class, and gender. Her works are rich with symbols, both personal and collective, and they challenge us to find new meaning and possibility in old stories. This activity was inspired by Saar's depression era ethos of “use it up, make it do, go without," as well as her love of symbols and old objects. It is a three part process that took us several relaxed, fun-filled days to finish.

Kids' Art Studio - August 3rd - 6th

This summer's Kids' Art Studio will be an Encore! of our Artists in the Spotlight summer camps. We will take our inspiration from Shel Silverstein (Tuesday), Georgia O'Keeffee (Wednesday), Betye Saar (Thursday), and Ray and Charles Eames (Friday). Even though returning students may be familiar with the artists, the projects will be new. Unlike summer camp, students may attend one day, all four, or anything in between.

Youth Pottery - July Sessions

Students will explore the various ways of creating functional and sculptural objects by learning different hand-building techniques: slabs, coils, and glazing will be studied. Each session is two weeks long, first week students focus on building, the second week will focus on glazing. Each session will offer a different opportunity to create allowing students to take multiple sessions as their schedules permit.

Artists in the Spotlight

We are happy to announce a full six-week roster of in-person summer camps this year for children ages 6-14. Each week we will explore a different artist in depth, creating works inspired by their medium, subject matter, philosophy, and life. Each 4 day camp will include a combination of two dimensional and three dimensional projects, and will be divided into a 6-10 year old age group and an 11-14 year old group. As always, we will learn a lot, play, explore, and expand our understanding of art and the world around us!

Summer Art Camp - Art Through the Decades

Join us this summer for an exciting journey through the twentieth century! Each week will bring an exploration of the visual art and popular culture of a decade (or two). We will take our inspiration from artists and art movements, popular trends in clothing, architecture, literature, theatre, film, music, and dance, as well as the historical and social forces that shaped each era. Each 4 day camp will include a combination of two dimensional and three dimensional projects, and will be divided into a 6-10 year old age group and an 11-14 year old group. For our 6-10 year old cohort, we are pleased to announce a partnership with the OSU Department of Theatre that will bring an added element of movement and performance to each week.
