Artists In The Spotlight 2023

We are happy to announce a full six-week roster of summer art camps this year for children ages 6-14. Each week we will explore a different artist in depth, creating works inspired by their medium, subject matter, philosophy, and life. Each 4 day camp will include a combination of two dimensional and three dimensional projects, and will be divided into a 6-10 year old age group and an 11-14 year old group. As always, we will learn a lot, play, explore, and expand our understanding of art and the world around us!

Join us for this first week of camp as we turn the spotlight on the vibrant, tactile, and three dimensional paintings of Alan Shields. Unlike many of the artists of his day, Shields was a maximalist, making works that celebrate the physicality of his labor and his materials. This will be a week of big works that just may drip with beads and baubles and bits!

This week our spotlight is on the ever inquisitive contemporary Mexican artist, Gabriel Orozco. Orozco engages with many mediums including drawing, photography, sculpture, and installation. He is especially interested in using everyday objects in his artwork, using them to tell stories and ask questions about the nature of our physical existence. Like Orozco, we. will spend our week asking questions and telling stories (and maybe making a joke or two) through our artwork!
Week 2
June 13th-16th

This week we take a deep dive into the mesmerizing, self-created worlds of installation artist Yayoi Kusama. With Kusama as our guide, we will create our own colorful, imagined worlds, both large and small, individually and collaboratively!
Week 3

Join us this week as we turn the spotlight on mixed media artist and educator, Howardena Pindell. Pindell is well known for her elaborate stages of making. She paints on a canvas, rips it into pieces, and sews it back together. She makes drawings on top of paintings and then punches small dots out of those works to build up the surface of a new work. This week we will work and play like Pindell, steeped in our process, building layer upon layer for stunning, complex final works!
Week 4
June 27th-30th

To RSVP, please fill out our registration form register blue or call us at 405-744-1535.

June 6th 9th7

Join us this week as we turn our spotlight on the renowned work and life of painter and collagist Henri Matisse. Like Matisse and his fellow Fauvists, we will prioritize exuberant colors, fluid lines, and bold brush strokes. We will look to our immediate environments for inspiration and, of course, take time to play with paper cut outs.
Week 5

To RSVP, please fill out our registration form register pink or call us at 405-744-1535.

June 6th 9th9

Join us for the last week of our summer camp series, Artists in the Spotlight. We will take inspiration from beloved Lebanese artist, writer, and bookmaker, Etel Adnan. Adnan's work is abstract, holy, playful. She painted, wrote poetry, and made art books she called "her little leporellos" in which she combined her words with color and line and texture. Like Adnan, we will spend the week unabashedly pursuing beauty in all things!
Week 6
July 18th-21st

To RSVP, please fill out our registration form register green or call us at 405-744-1535.
