This summer's Kids' Art Studio will be an Encore! of our Artists in the Spotlight summer camps. We will take our inspiration from artists Alan Shields (Tuesday), Gabriel Orozco (Wednesday), Henri Matisse (Thursday), and Etel Adnan (Friday). Even though returning students may be familiar with the artists and their work, the projects will be new. Unlike summer camp, students may attend one day, all four, or anything in between.

We are happy to announce a full six-week roster of summer art camps this year for children ages 6-14. Each week we will explore a different artist in depth, creating works inspired by their medium, subject matter, philosophy, and life. Each 4 day camp will include a combination of two dimensional and three dimensional projects, and will be divided into a 6-10 year old age group and an 11-14 year old group. As always, we will learn a lot, play, explore, and expand our understanding of art and the world around us!

This year's Spring Break Camp will be a non-stop celebration of our love for animals! Humans have been expressing their connection to the animal kingdom through art and storytelling since the very beginning of recorded history. In this four day camp, we will explore some of the stories and artworks that feature our four legged, finned, or feathered friends and make works, both 2D and 3D, that celebrate our lasting connection to them. We will begin our week with a very special visit to the OSU Museum of Art for a permanent collection vault viewing to see animal inspired works up close and personal!

Art Academy is an after-school class designed for students who wish to develop and grow their artistic aptitude. Throughout each six week session, students learn and practice foundational skills in the visual arts and are exposed to a variety of mediums in both the 2D and 3D arts. Art Academy students also develop strong visual literacy and critical thinking skills through looking at and discussing their own artwork and the artwork of others. For the 6-10 year old cohort, each session yields a "final" work or project that is shared and discussed. For the 11-14 year old students, the focus shifts to skills-based instruction with an emphasis on drawing, painting, design, and composition.

In this class, students will experiment with two types of felting; needle felting and wet felting. For the first project, they will wet felt a bar of soap.  The soap is covered with a layer of felt which they will decorate with colorful pieces of wool.  The finished soap serves as both soap and washcloth and the felted layer continues to shrink as the soap is used. Students will also be able to needle felt at least one holiday ornament using colors and shapes of their choice.  These items make great gifts or they can be kept and used for their own holiday decorations.
