Instruction will include students’ skills in the areas of general properties of clay, throwing on the wheel, and glazing. This is a class that will allow you to get your hands dirty, make mistakes, and get the feel of the wheel. No previous experience in clay is needed for this class. In this course, students explore the basic physical properties of clay by practicing a variety of hand-forming techniques used to create functional objects. Hand-forming techniques will include, pinch pots, slab building, mold slumping, and texture. The objective is not to make pieces to take home, rather learning what is possible and allowing you to get your hands dirty and feel what it's like! Have you ever been interested in learning the art of metalsmithing in order to create your own, one-of-a-kind jewelry? Now you can at Prairie Arts Center! In this Beginning Metalsmithing and Jewelry course, students will learn to solder, texture, saw, file, and set a stone while creating a beautiful ring to take home. Students will also learn jewelry studio safety protocols and how to properly use and care for the tools. No previous metalsmithing experience is required. Upon completion of this course, students may sign up to use the studio during open studio hours.

For those with previous experience in metalsmithing, we have an exciting class with local artist Kathy Shann! Kathy will be teaching how to design and make a sterling silver ring with two beautiful stones. Students should have basic knowledge of sawing, texturing, soldering and stone setting. Students will choose and purchase a stone directly from Kathy and will need to bring cash or use Venmo as form of payment directly to her. She will bring a variety of stones to choose from.
