Join us this week as we turn our attention toward the element of visual art that is so rich and multi-faceted it can stand alone: texture! Campers will learn how texture can be implied or real. They will play with paper mache, fabric, mixed media, assemblage, and palette knife painting, taking inspiration from the likes of Meret Oppenheim, Betye Saar, Nick Cave, and Jackson Pollock!

Join us this week as we focus in on scale and balance! Often used by artists to effect viewer perception, these two principles of design lend themselves to experimentation and manipulation. Scale, ranging from the miniature to the monumental, will be explored through the works of the surrealists, monumental sculptors such as Claes Oldenburg and Niki de Saint Phalle, and the miniature worlds of doll houses and collector's shelves. Our balance project will be sculptural and require quick thinking and the willingness to experiment!

Join us this week as we focus in on two elements of art that highlight our experience of dimension: shape and form! Campers will play with going back and forth between two and three dimensional artmaking and combine the two into a single artwork. They will explore the difference between organic and geometric shape and form, taking inspiration from artists like Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, Keith Haring, and Barbara Hepworth along the way.

Join us for our final week of Fun with Fundamentals as we explore pattern and emphasis, two principles of design that both guide and thrill the viewer's eye! Campers will take inspiration from the repeated motifs of traditional cultures the world over, as well as the quilters of Gee's Bend, Anni Albers, Gustav Klimt, and Yayoi Kusama. And no one knows the art of emphasis like the ancients, so campers will also travel back in time this week to Egypt, Greece, and Rome!

Join us this summer as we take a deep dive into the elements of art and principles of design!  Each week students will create works inspired by one or more of the elements (i.e. color, texture, shape) and one or more of the principles (i.e. pattern, emphasis, scale). They will look at work by artists that exemplify and exalt these basics. Each 4 day camp will include a combination of two dimensional and three dimensional projects and, as always, we will learn a lot, play, explore, and expand our understanding of art and the world around us!

Prairie Arts Center is excited to  partner with the OSU Museum of Art for this year's
Spring Break Camp, the Artist's Mark. This 4-day camp will begin on Tuesday, March 17th with a visit to the museum for an interactive tour of Guild Hall: An Adventure in the Arts, an exhibition that features works from some of the most iconic artists of the 20th century including Jim Dine, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Miriam Schapiro. This exhibition offers us a wide variety of styles and mediums to explore, with the connecting theme of place. During our time together, we will focus on using unexpected materials and mark making while creating both two dimensional and three dimensional works.  Students should bring a lunch and snack, and come dressed for the weather and making messes!
