This class will introduce you to three basic methods of screen printing: stencil, screen filler, and emulsion. You will learn techniques and tools necessary to use our studio facilities as well as a crash course in photoshop and transparency photo printing for rendering images to use for screenprinting. There are many possibilities with screenprinting hand drawn images and digital images so come prepared with some broad ideas of what kind of imagery you want to make and be ready to take notes. A good start for image references is Pinterest. Once you have completed this class you will be able to schedule time in the print studio on your own.

Introduction to Wheel Throwing 2 will offer the continued practice of centering and creating a cylinder vessel. Demonstration and discussion on advanced surface decoration and glazing techniques will also be covered. Students should have previously taken the Introduction to Wheel Throwing 1 to participate in this class. During this class, students are eligible for instructional open studio time.

In this workshop, you will learn several techniques to etch patterns, designs and even photographs onto copper, brass and sterling silver.*  We will use the etched metal to create a pendant with your own unique pattern and texture. You will be asked to provide a 8 1/2” x 11” sheet of design/photos that you would like to transfer onto metal at least 1 week prior to the class.

For those with previous experience in metalsmithing, we have an exciting class with local artist Kathy Shann! Kathy will be teaching how to design and make a sterling silver shadow box pendant with a large stone. Students should have basic knowledge of sawing, texturing, soldering and stone setting. Students will choose and purchase a stone directly from Kathy and will need to bring cash or use Venmo as form of payment directly to her. She will bring a variety of stones to choose from.

Have you ever been interested in learning the art of metalsmithing in order to create your own, one-of-a-kind jewelry? Now you can at Prairie Arts Center! In this Beginning Metalsmithing and Jewelry course, students will learn to solder, texture, saw, file, and set a stone while creating a beautiful ring to take home. Students will also learn jewelry studio safety protocols and how to properly use and care for the tools. No previous metalsmithing experience is required. Upon completion of this course, students may sign up to use the studio during open studio hours.
